This is a strenuous day of walking through woods and across open moorland with wonderful views and several steep climbs. Soon after leaving Richmond you enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park and stay within it for the rest of the walk.

Refreshments are available in Richmond, Downholme, Grinton and Reeth.

Public conveniences are located in Richmond, Grinton and Reeth

Wonderful views throughout the day up and across Swaledale.

The highlights on this section of the Swale Way are:

  • A carpet of purple heather in season
  • The sight and sounds of lapwings, curlews and grouse
  • Relics of the lead-mining era
  • The refreshingly unchanged Dales town of Reeth
